Desperques plans to make most of Murphy encounter
Friday 20th June 2008, 4:24PM BST.
Martyn Desperques, plays 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy, tomorrow at Fort Regent.
MARTYN DESPERQUES faces the biggest match of his life tomorrow.
Guernsey’s Individual Snooker League champion is taking part in the Jersey leg of the inaugural World Series of Snooker at Fort Regent.
He will face Shaun Murphy, who won the World Championship at The Crucible in 2005. Since then, he has become one of the major forces in the game and he is ranked third in the world for the beginning of next season.
Desperques is under no illusions about the challenge he faces in the best-of-seven frames match, but he is determined to enjoy himself.
‘I can’t wait until Saturday afternoon because these kinds of game don’t come about very often, he said.
‘Just getting to meet these people is a privilege, so to be playing him is extra special.
‘I haven’t set myself any targets on what would be a good result, although I wouldn’t mind winning 4-0.’
The tournament is the brainchild of John Higgins, twice world champion, who wants to expand the game to different areas of Europe.
He is taking part, as are two other top professionals, Mark Selby and Ken Doherty.
After Jersey, the pros will move on to Germany, Russia and Poland before the finals in Dusseldorf.
And Desperques hopes that this will not be his only chance to play against the best.
‘The event should be in Jersey again next year and I would love to play there again. I just have to concentrate on winning the island Individual League again,’ he said.
Although Desperques’ match will not be broadcast live, highlights might be shown on British Eurosport next week. Check TV listings for more details.
