Man crushed to death
Saturday 21st June 2008, 11:34AM BST.
A 25-YEAR-OLD man has died after being crushed by a car.
Avelino da Sousa Pedra was apparently working under the vehicle in a communal car park just off La Couperderie, St Peter Port.
Emergency services arrived at about 10.45pm on Thursday, but he died 45 minutes later in hospital.
Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
The scene in La Couperderie at the time of the incident have been described as mayhem by a witness, who was staying at her boyfriend’s home across the road from the car park.
‘There were a lot of Portuguese guys there and at first we thought they were kicking off because they had lost the football.
‘But there was also a woman who was screaming non-stop and we thought she might have been beaten up.
‘My boyfriend didn’t really want to get involved, but he went down to see what was going on and came back to say we needed to call the police.
‘At that point we didn’t even know a car was involved so he told the police that there was a fracas going on.’
The 41-year-old witness, who does not wish to be named, said the police arrived shortly after the call was made as they had been contacted already. They were followed by an ambulance and fire engines.
It was at this point she saw a man being carried into an ambulance while paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.
‘It was just pure bedlam. There were two fire engines, an ambulance and loads of police cars. They cordoned off the road before another ambulance came along to take away another injured man.’
She estimates the ambulances left the scene at around 11pm, at which time the police began taking pictures of the area before a tow truck arrived to take away a white Audi.
‘There were probably between eight and 10 people making all the noise before the police arrived.
‘And the woman, who had long, blondish hair, must have been screaming for about 10 minutes before the police showed up.
‘We were just surprised that the police showed up first because if she was screaming at what she saw and what we have since been told happened, then surely an ambulance would have been called first?
But it didn’t seem an ambulance was called until the police arrived.’
A police spokesman said officers were investigating the sequence of events leading up to the incident and would like to speak to any
witnesses.
