Pick your own Guernsey greats to play Legends
Saturday 21st June 2008, 11:42AM BST.
WARK THIS WAY: Liverpool Legend John Wark displays some deft footwork against Bels in last September’s match at the Track.
THE public are being asked to help select a Guernsey Legends side to take on the Liverpool Legends.
Following last year’s highly successful match between Bels and the Legends which featured the likes of John Barnes, Ian Rush, Jan Molby and Jason McAteer, another fixture has been organised for Monday 8 September at the Track.
And this time Liverpool will face a team made up of Guernsey footballers who themselves can be considered legends.
But to help Guernsey Legends manager Glyn Smith, the Liverpool Supporters’ Club, which is again the match organiser, want your help.
‘We’ve got to pick a balanced squad,’ said Smith.
‘We want 24 players and we have got to balance between people who have recently retired and the real legends who can play a bit at the start of each half. Like maybe have Colin Renouf and Colin Gervaise-Brazier come on and kick a ball.’
For the ‘younger legends’, Smith named the likes of Chris Hamon, Stuart Polson, Tony Vance and the Nobes brothers, Paul and John, who could be considered.
Readers are asked to submit their best 11 who have played for Guernsey.
They cannot name any current Guernsey squad members and the players have to be fit and able to take part in the game.
Suggestions are to be sent to sport@guernsey-press.com.
The deadline is the end of the month.
A panel containing Smith and Guernsey Press sports editor Rob Batiste among others, will then decide from the suggested players a final squad.
One name on the team sheet is Matt Le Tissier, who has confirmed that he will turn out for Guernsey.
Bank Julius Baer and Evans & Co. will again sponsor the game.
Last year’s event was hailed as a massive success.
In front of more than 3,500 fans, the Legends staged a remarkable comeback from 4-0 down after 20 minutes to win 6-4.
Off the pitch, £26,000 was raised for Les Bourg’s Hospice and Help a Guernsey Child.
Guernsey Cheshire Home will benefit from this year’s match.
A dinner will also be held the night before to help raise money.
Brian Evans, sponsor and a member of the Liverpool Supporters Club, the old Mersey greats cannot wait to come back.
‘Put it this way they were telephoning me in February asking if we were on again,’ said Evans.
