Cobo car park is blocked again
Monday 23rd June 2008, 2:29PM BST.
COBO car park was blocked off again yesterday as the ownership dispute took a new twist. According to reports, vehicles left in the car park in the morning were removed and taken to a nearby field before eight of them were later returned to block off any possible entrance or exit to the car park.
Thomas Holroyd, who claims to own the land through purchase of the Fief de Carteret from his mother Kathleen, declined to comment on yesterday’s developments. Meanwhile Castel senior constable Chris Workman said the douzaine had nothing to do with any of the vehicles’ removal from the area.
The car park was first blocked off by boulders at the end of January. ‘There were hints that it was going to be done, but I don’t know who is responsible. It was not the douzaine,’ said Mr Workman. ‘I understand the cars were moved and now they’ve been placed back, blocking the car park off.’
He said the douzaine would be talking to its lawyers to see if there was anything that could be done before it meets at its monthly meeting this evening.

Why don’t the police impound the abandoned cars until ownership of the land is categorically proven by the person dumping cars.
This is a public amenity area used by all the local community.
Surely someone has witnessed the culprit moving cars and boulders etc??
Surely it is not beyond the whit of this islands judicial authorities to ascertain the legal status of the land in question. If it shown not to be common land, end of story – everybody knows where they stand and life can go on again undisturbed by all the brouhaha.
If, however, there is doubt about the private ownership of the land, whoever is dumping the cars can then be brought to court and charged with dumping in a public place. The miscreant will then be able to plead the defence of ownership of the land and put their case for ownership before the court.
At least it would put an end to the repetitive problem that the opposing claims are causing.
