Roberto’s would welcome square without traffic

0360079.jpgTRANSFORMING Trinity Square into a pedestrian-friendly zone would provide a huge boost to the area, according to Roberto’s proprietor Gabriel Pestana.

He has been running the restaurant for seven years and has heard many rumours that measures would be introduced to make the area more appealing to islanders and tourists.

He said he would back the ideas of architect David Falla, principal of Falla Associates International, that would include removing the slip road that goes through Trinity Square leading onto Lower Vauvert, reversing the traffic flow of Upper Mansell Street and making Lower Vauvert and some of the connecting roads one-way.

‘We need something to develop the business and anything is better than what we have now. This is not a bad business, but it could be a lot better if something was done. If some seating and alfresco areas were introduced I would be happy because with fewer cars and traffic coming through here, people would be attracted to Trinity Square.’

I agree that this would be a good idea. However, this area is crying out for a car park. Mill street is still suffering from a real lack of access for shoppers and many of the independent local retailers suffer as a result. By all means make Trinity square pedestrian friendly, but provide car parking for this part of town. With Sandpiper potentially introducing more UK brands, St Peter Port is in danger of becoming any town UK. If a car park could be built at the old Gabriels’ building in a sympathetic manor, then the whole area could be rejuvinated and pedestrianised from this point down, to include the area around the town church

I agree the area is crying out for some parking. My suggestion would be a multistorey car park next door to Custard Castle, because no one could claim it would spoil the area when it was placed next to such a monstrosity of architecture.
