CHECKERS’ negotiations with the man who claims he owns Cobo car park have stalled, says the supermarket’s CEO.

Tony O’Neill – boss of Sandpiper, which owns Checkers – said he had tried to come to an agreement with Thomas Holroyd, who claims to own the land. ‘We have tried to engage with this gentleman on several occasions,’ Mr O’Neill said. ‘We have asked him to produce evidence that he owns this car park and so far he has failed.’

The Castel Douzaine met last night to discuss the problem after the car park was again blocked on Sunday.  Senior constable Chris Workman said he was trying to arrange a meeting between the parties. ‘I spoke to Mr Holroyd yesterday and suggested it might be a good idea to have a meeting between him and the businesses down there, along with the douzaine,’ he said.

‘He was quite happy to talk. This is all about the amount of money he wants per car parking space.  We are going to hold the meeting, hopefully later this week, to see if an agreement can be reached.’
