Student loans set to go on hold for four years

STUDENTS look increasingly likely to avoid loans for at least four years. Education member Matt Fallaize (pictured) has submitted a requete on the issue that has secured 23 signatories – it needs 24 votes to overturn the introduction of loans agreed by the previous House.
Deputy Fallaize, who had only one member refuse to sign the petition, stopped seeking support while still short of a majority so as to ensure a lively debate when it comes to the States in September.
If successful, the requete would mean the current system continued until the end of the academic year that starts in September 2011, with more money being given to Education to fund the anticipated £2.5m. annual shortfall. Education would then report back on the issue in 2011.
Deputy Fallaize said the requete wording needed to satisfy a range of opinions. ‘I’m opposed to student contribution, period. I have made that clear to all those who have signed the requete,’ said Deputy Fallaize.
