A RADIO presenter went  back 40 years yesterday when his show was broadcast from his former school. John Randall, who works for BBC Guernsey, was in the first year when St Peter Port Secondary opened in 1968.

‘There were no lockers in those days, only coat pegs,’ he said. ‘I remember my first day well. There were one or two of the older guys who wanted to put the first-years in the litter bin but they missed me out.’

Mr Randall’s family lived in the nearby Courtil Bris and on one occasion he recalled the family dog scratching at the classroom door during lessons. ‘I enjoyed woodwork and metalwork as I was more practically minded than academic,’ he said.

‘The school uniform was the traditional Guernsey with grey trousers and black shoes that my mum would take me to Gabriel’s to buy.’

The school will close next month when pupils will transfer to St Sampson’s High.
