CONCERNED parents have been contacting police over the weekend after it emerged that an allegation had been made against a member of Amherst Primary School’s non-teaching staff.

An off-duty member of the family-protection unit was called in to deal with the enquiries about a child protection-related matter.

‘Any parents with concerns should, by all means, call us and we’ll do everything we can to alleviate any fears they might have,’ said police spokesman Inspector Geoff Chapman. An allegation has been made and a member of staff suspended.  This is normal procedure whenever there’s a child involved. I can’t comment on the investigation itself.’

Director of education Derek Neale sent a letter to all parents on Thursday informing them of the situation and asking them not to take heed of any gossip and rumour surrounding the allegation, which could upset children and possibly prejudice police enquiries.
