AN INITIATIVE has been launched to help keep Guernsey fishermen safe.

Sea Fisheries, Channel Island Electricity Grid and the RNLI have come together to help pay for boats to be fitted with lifesaving technology.

The MOB Guardian has been developed by the RNLI to reduce the risk to commercial fishermen at sea. RNLI fishing safety coordinator Sean Friday said that the system not only helped the lifeboat service, but also gave fishermen peace of mind.

‘We hope many more fishermen will come on board with this idea because it really takes the search out of search and rescue.’ The system has been available only since December but has already saved three fishermen whose boat sank off Sark last month.
