PUBLIC Services has contingency measures in place for all its business units in the event of any disruption to services.

A number of the department’s operations, which include States Works and Guernsey Water, have been affected by today’s strike action.   Those most affected are those provided by States Works, whose staff include 220 public service employees.

It operates the island’s main waste and recycling facilities, refuse collections, drainage maintenance, road sweeping and public toilets.  The first service to be affected was this morning’s refuse collection in St Peter Port. Households are being asked to take their bins back in and put them out again tonight.

Mont Cuet, the green waste site at Chouet and the recycling facility at Longue Hougue will be shut today. Those most likely to be affected are waste collection contractors, who will have to wait until the sites reopen.

States Works management expect that following a one-day stoppage, services will be back to normal tomorrow.
