Blog – Guernsey on strike

Monday 21st July 2008, 2:31PM BST.

11.50am – This morning’s ‘mini-strike’ by firemen at Guernsey Airport may have lasted only 30 minutes – from 6.30am to 7am – but it was sufficient to disrupt flights for the rest of the morning.

While several morning flights were cancelled or very late, Blue Islands cancelled all of its services for the day ‘as a precaution’, but it’s possible this afternoon’s will be reinstated.

There’s a chance that another mini-strike could be called by firemen who start their shift after midday.

Airport manual workers have downed tools for the whole day.

12.01pm – At St Peter Port Harbour, Condor’s midday sailing to Poole has been cancelled.

While HD Ferries announced this morning that it was cancelling all today’s sailings, Condor left their sailings open.

Our reporter heard that the company had hoped to allow foot passengers only on board, but this option was eventually set aside in favour of cancelling the sailing. It looks as if there will be no sailings until 9pm tonight. The strike is due to end at 8pm.

12.30pm – Blue Islands has reinstated its flights for the remainder of today.

2.10pm – With the main tip closed, some putrescible waste is being taken to the Materials Recovery Facility at Pointes Lane, when it will remain until being moved to Mont Cuet when it reopens tomorrow.

Household rubbish is still sitting on the kerb in some areas of St Peter Port – while some parishes employ private contractors to collect rubbish, St Peter Port uses the States Works Department.

3pm - Non-emergency operations (those involving a general anaesthetic) at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital have been cancelled.

There’s some confusion as to what time today’s action will end. In theory it could go on until midnight, but it’s been suggested that normal working will resume at about 8pm.

4.10pm – Airport firemen have apparently confirmed to management that there will be no further action today.

5pm – Despite a report that no further action would be taken, the airport closed again for just over an hour at five when the firefighters once again went on strike. Flights were disrputed by an hour or so, but all landed eventually.

6.07pm – The airport reopened and the one day strike was officially over.

8.30pm – Union representatives met with management. Union official Ron Le Cras said afterwards that no further action is planned at this time.
