Drink-driving checks to be made any time, anywhere

NOT drinking alcohol is the only safe way drivers can be sure they are under the drink-drive limit, a police sergeant has said.
Sergeant John Tostevin, who ran a team of officers operating random roadside checks on Friday night, said he hoped to pass on some sound advice to drivers.
‘I’m always asked, “how much can I have and still drive home?”, and that’s a silly question,’ he said. ‘No one should make a decision based on what is an unknown science. The only way to be sure that you are safe to drive is to not drink at all.
‘If you get that decision wrong, what can be the implications? Someone’s life? Your job? Your family life? In the end, it could ruin your life and the life of those around you.’
Police will be carrying out random spot checks around the island until 31 August as part of the first summer anti-drink-drive campaign.
