NEARLY 29,000 passengers from cruise ships have visited Guernsey in what looks set to be a record-breaking year. It is expected that 94 vessels will visit in 2008. The 10-year average is 60.

A temporary pontoon and ramp on the inter-island quay have also proved a success and a more permanent arrangement is planned for next year.

‘I’m delighted with the season so far – it’s gone so well,’ said harbour master Captain Peter Gill. He added that new facilities would improve access for cruise liner passengers as well as those using the Sark boats.

‘What’s there at the moment is an interim measure,’ said Capt. Gill. ‘But we were more than pleased with the result and the feedback from the liners.’

The ramp cost around £30,000. ‘We’ve had observations made in the past that climbing the steps with no handrail on the side isn’t a positive experience for elderly folk,’ he said.
