‘Island should invest more in sport’

0531100.jpgGUERNSEY is crying out for a dedicated squash facility, according to the departing director of the sport in the island. Peter Bridgeman (pictured) indicated that a four-court centre would cost around £500,000 and that it would not take up too much space.

He said four squash courts are the same size as one tennis court and he has urged backers, either public or private, to embrace the idea.

‘A facility and more funding probably have to be top of the list [of things I would like to see happen locally],’ he said. ‘For an island that is so keen on sport, it should put more money into it. Where that comes from . . . ? The States or companies that are registered here and they don’t do anything but are just registered here…’

Bridgeman has been in the post for the last five years, having taken over from Gareth Webber. He is leaving in the next couple of weeks, as is assistant director Martin Watts. The Guernsey Squash Rackets Association recently announced that it is pulling out of private club King’s and relocating to Beau Sejour.
