Constitution debate will go ahead
Thursday 31st July 2008, 11:32AM BST.
A NEW constitutional framework agreement with the UK will be debated by the States. The Policy Council has bowed to pressure from deputies.
More than half of them signed a letter presented to Chief Minister Lyndon Trott (pictured) on Monday demanding that they have a say on the document after he was set to sign it.
He had argued that the agreement does not need States approval. Deputy Trott told the House yesterday that an identically worded document had been signed between the UK and both Jersey and the Isle of Man on 1 May 2007 apart from the substitution of the name of the island.
‘The principles set out are intended to establish a framework for the development of the international identities of each island,’ said Deputy Trott. The council discussed the deputies’ letter on Monday afternoon.
‘The Policy Council acknowledges that there is clearly the political will to do so and will therefore prepare a report for debate in the States this autumn, most probably at the October meeting,’ said Deputy Trott.
