Airport has plans in case of further strike
Saturday 2nd August 2008, 9:30AM BST.
AIRPORT management is considering its options in the event of further strike action by firefighters. Flights were disrupted 12 days ago when crews held two lightning strikes in the dispute over public sector workers’ pay.
Airport director Colin Le Ray (pictured) said management was aware that there remained a risk of some disruption to flying in the coming weeks.
‘We have reviewed a number of contingency plans, specifically in respect of maintenance of appropriate fire cover,’ he said. The review included reconsideration of a previous application made in 2005 to vary the terms of the aerodrome licence. That application was rejected then on reasonable grounds.
‘Those grounds have not changed in the intervening time and our review concluded there was no merit at this time in revisiting this area,’ said Mr Le Ray.
Other options for contingency plans are to be discussed next week.
