RUGBY player Dave McGall is putting something back after the Special Care Baby Unit looked after his twins. Fergus and Logan were cared for by the unit after they became seriously ill with a virus when just 20 days old.

‘The evening before a match, Fergus was taken ill with breathing difficulties,’ said Mr McGall, 27. ‘He actually turned blue in front of us.’

He and his wife, Nicola, rushed their son to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and he was transferred to the unit. Several days later his twin brother started showing the same symptoms. He was also rushed to the unit and both began to show signs of recovery.

‘The care our children received was extraordinary. The nurses, doctors and paediatricians were all great,’ said Mr McGall

Guernsey’s Mini Olympics is raising money for the unit. Last year Mr McGall competed as part of the Scottish team. His team finished eighth overall. However, this year he is resigning himself to the sidelines.

Instead he will show his support as a referee.
