WATSON: No time for rest
Saturday 9th August 2008, 12:30PM BST.
Read all about it – top tennis player in town. Heather Watson took a break in her new globetrotting lifestyle to visit the Guernsey Press yesterday when she met those who write about her: from left – Gareth Le Prevost, Rob Batiste and Aaron Scoones. (Picture by John O’Neill, 0619401)
HEATHER WATSON has taken two days out of her incredibly busy schedule to come home.
That was all the time that the 16-year-old tennis star could spare in Guernsey during a summer that has seen her play at Junior Wimbledon, all around Europe in ITF ranking events, qualify for the junior US Open, help Great Britain make the final of the European Summer Cup and reach the junior Fed Cup in Mexico next month.
And her forthcoming diary is just as full as she prepares to head back to the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida for another year and compete in five major tournaments culminating in the Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune, India, in October.
Compare that schedule to last summer when, over a 12-week break from the academy, Watson was on the island for five weeks.
‘It’s been busy and hectic,’ she said.
‘Only two days’ rest then off again. I just need a bit more of a break but after these tournaments I’m going to take a break.’
