It’s safe to go back in the water
Monday 11th August 2008, 1:00PM BST.
ISLAND waters are again safe to bathe in.
Emergency foul-water outfalls had been in operation since Sunday of last week when a major leak occurred at the main Belle Greve pumping station, but the Red Lion short outfall is now the only one being used. It discharges just below the low-water mark in Belle Greve.
Public Services has installed new pumps there which mean foul water is no longer being discharged from the outfalls at St Sampson’s, La Piette and the White Rock. It was also being pumped out at Cobo for a short period.
Tests on Saturday showed that most beaches achieved guideline water quality. All west-coast beaches were tested along with Saints Bay, Petit Port, Ladies’ Bay and Havelet. Pembroke achieved the mandatory standard but Environmental Health said the public should not be concerned because it was on the margin of the higher guideline.
‘We are satisfied that the latest results confirm good bathing water quality conditions at the island’s main beaches and at Havelet and La Vallette Bathing Pools,’ said director John Cook.
