THE Lions Club is preparing for a smashing time at this year’s Donkey Derby.
The plate-smashing stall will make a welcome return to the annual event tomorrow in Saumarez Park.
The derby is nearing its 40th anniversary and the stall is making its fourth appearance.
‘Somebody had the idea after they had seen it at another event. People really seem to like doing it – it vents a bit of frustration,’ said public relations officer Tony Rowe.
‘We made an appeal for china thinking we would get a few cups and we were completely overwhelmed,’ he said.
Mr Rowe said people were often still smashing plates long after the last race had finished.
The event starts at noon, with the first race at 1.30pm and the last at 5.15pm. Entry is free and car parking is available at Home Farm for £4, a percentage of which will be donated to the Women’s Refuge.
