STUDENTS’ basic skills are still strong locally, according to the Education Department.
Responding to a national story that writing and maths skills have declined in the UK, lifelong learning manager Alun Williams said that was not the case in Guernsey.
The national Institute of Directors report said the government’s performance on education had been unfavourable to business.
‘It is a disappointment that national bodies such as the IoD chose the day before A-level results are announced to comment adversely on the education system,’ said Mr Williams.
‘It does nothing for students’ confidence to be discussing this at this time. Anybody who visits our schools will recognise a real sense of purpose and diligence and today of all days is the time to recognise their efforts and celebrate their achievements.’
