GUERNSEY travellers could benefit if BAA is forced to sell Gatwick, Aurigny has said.
The Competition Commission yesterday published its preliminary findings into BAA’s control of the UK’s largest airports and recommended that the operator should have to sell three of its seven.
It also said BAA should be forced to sell two of its three airports in the south-east – Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
BAA said it had ‘no intention’ of selling Heathrow.
Aurigny and Flybe service Gatwick, while only Aurigny operates to Stansted from Guernsey.
Aurigny commercial director Malcolm Coupar welcomed the commission’s
recommendations.
‘The Competition Commission’s recommendation that BAA sell off Gatwick could be good for Guernsey passengers,’ he said.
‘The South Terminal at Gatwick has fallen behind other airports over the years in the standard of its facilities and new owners could hopefully decide to invest in improved services, which would be a positive move for Guernsey passengers.’
