THEY are big men with big ambitions.
Put together, Simon Sharrott and Dave McGall have shown many times that they can be two granite blocks in an impressive Guernsey front-row wall.
Now they are joining forces in a concerted effort to drive the Guernsey Rugby Club forward in their respective new roles as first-team captain and club captain.
‘Andy [Bailey] did a great job, but we also felt that there was too much pressure on him,’ said Sharrott of his predecessor.
‘Primarily the job of first team captain is getting wins on the pitch, not the administration side of things.
‘We felt we had to spread out the responsibility somewhat and to that end Dave has come in as club captain. He will look after more of the administration side and give me more of a chance to concentrate on the playing side of things.
‘I think it is a great idea. It is something I have had at my clubs in England and it has always worked well.’
McGall said his first priority as club captain was to support Sharrott.
‘Simon’s priorities are winning games, getting the first team ready for matches and making sure we improve on last year. If there is any support he needs on admin stuff away from that, he can pass it on to me.
‘What we did have with Bails was that he was left to do it all himself, but as the club grows so the role grows and it cannot all come down to one captain.
‘It is something that has been in our plans for a while, but it has now been ratified at the AGM and it has been working well so far,’ McGall added.
