SUNDAY’S seafront closure could become a regular occurrence.
Culture and Leisure minister Mike O’Hara was pleased with the response.
‘It was very good. It seemed to be well attended,’ he said.
‘Mums and dads were able to walk their children in their prams and walk up and down the seafront.’
He said that many people had approached him asking if market stalls could be set up there. He did not rule that out.
‘The seafront belongs to the people of Guernsey.
‘We are just trying to get people to come to the seafront.’
Deputy O’Hara said they would evaluate Sunday’s closure and this weekend’s before deciding whether it should be repeated next year from Liberation Day until the end of September.
‘I think it would work very well. This was the first try but hopefully this Sunday people will come down.
‘It’s just the chance for people to do something different.’
Restaurateurs who offered alfresco dining said they would be keen to do it again.
David Legoupil, manager of Mora, said that the cost for the restaurant to take part and extending the liquor licence to cover outside was well worth it.
‘It was very good,’ he said.
‘Not only for the business but also for the families. Parents could have lunch while the children could play in the streets in a safe area.
‘I hope that they will do it again.
‘If they did it every Sunday, we would definitely do it if it was in the summer.’
Manager of the Boathouse Alban Chapeau agreed.
‘It was a really good idea. We had live music outside and on Sunday, depending on the weather, we are going to do a barbecue.
‘It would do well for next year and be great for Sundays.’
