ST MARTIN’S shoppers can now spend a penny in the rebuilt public toilets which were opened yesterday.
The facilities were the first in the island to be funded entirely by the parish rather than the States. They replace the old toilets opposite the community centre in Rue Maze.
Dean of the douzaine Barbara Herve officially opened them, with a length of toilet roll replacing the usual ribbon.
‘The old ones desperately needed replacing because they were presenting all sorts of problems,’ she said.
‘We are delighted that some state-of-the-art toilets are available to the public.’
The build, by States Works, took about a year and cost £100,000, which had been put aside by the parish.
A facility for the disabled was also included and the cost covered improvements to the car park.
‘It was more economical to rebuild than to upgrade,’ said douzenier Ben Gregg. ‘I’m pleased with how they have been done out and I hope users will think they are better.’
