The electrical system within the church needs to be replaced. The upgrade is due at the end of this year, which will put the building out of action for a few months.
‘We are out to tender at the moment,’ said Canon Paul Mellor.
‘We are hoping that they will be able to work by the end of the year, until Easter.’
During that time, the Canon of the Catholic Church, Father Michael Hoare, has offered the use of Notre Dame Church.
‘It was a very kind offer as we are in a bit of a mess at the moment. It’s quite historic in a way. 20 years ago this would be unimaginable.
‘It’s an offer we are very grateful for.’
Canon Mellor said that many were put off from tendering by the amount of work entailed. Initially they had hoped that they could work on a third of the church, but it was soon found that it was more economical to do all of the church in one go.
‘We are very aware that we need to be as cost effective as possible,’ he said.THE Town Church could close temporarily next year.
