It’s just unthinkable

Monday 1st September 2008, 2:30PM BST.

0631957.jpgCHARITY boxes in memory of former Venture Garage employee Ben Davies were stolen days before his funeral when the property was ram-raided on Saturday evening.

A car, stolen from the same garage and used to break the door down was found burning in Rue de la Gallie, St Peter’s, about an hour later.

‘It’s just mind-boggling,’ said Venture Garage proprietor, Chris McClean (pictured right). ‘There must have been hundreds of pounds in those boxes and Ben’s photograph was alongside them.

‘Perhaps they [the boxes] should have been put away but you don’t expect people to break in and do that sort of thing. It’s just unthinkable and we don’t need people like that in our society.’

Mr Davies, 25, died in a motorcycle accident in St Peter’s on 8 August. His funeral is tomorrow.

This is really sick – good to see the CCTV actually has a decent image – surely someone knows who this is?

Hope they throw the book at them when they find them.

Pathetic crime carried out by idiots – all of that damage for probably £200 and some cigarettes.

How sick some people are..at least there is a cctv and it worked let’s hope they catch this idiot/ mindless person who done this and throw the book at them.
Then again this is the sort of society we live in now, a world full of wasters.

In an island as small as Gsy there must be someone who knows this evil person. Come forward and name them – what an absolute lowlife to do this. I really hope they catch him/her and make them pay dearly for this cowardly act.
    My sympathies to the family.

Enough is enough! Bring back the Birch – let us have a credible deterant for scum like this who have no respect for society.

However, as the States and the Courts are not strong enough to protect us – what`s the betting that if he is caught he gets a suspended sentence after his Advocate has pleaded that his offence is “At the lower end of the scale”.

Terrible but there is much more to come if Guernsey insists on using cheap labour from outside its shores.

The birch may not be such a bad idea but the world is far too hypocritical to allow it.

I’m sorry bringing back the “birch” is one of the idiotic suggestions I have heard to solve Guernsey’s crime problem. Where shall we stop – OK he stole therefore we whip him, he’s repeat offender lets cut off a limp, he’s murdered somebody lets shoot him, corporal punishment does not work and we as a civilised society are better than that and we should not lower ourselves to the ciminals low standards. As for pleading an offence at the “lower end of the scale” this is why justice is blind. It takes the emotion out of the sentencing and punishment and says “this is the offence this is the punishment.”
The local media do not help with their sensationalist headlines.
Was it an awful crime – Yes of course.
Does it deserve punishment – Yes.
Does it deserve a posse baying for blood – No it doesn’t

Sorry, what on earth does Guernsey insisting on cheap labor from abroad have to do with a ram raid and some guy nicking cash from a forecourt? That’s right… absolutely nothing. Some people need to read what the articles are about before commenting…

I think that this imbecile will regret his totally abhorrent actions once he is caught and named/shamed – who will want to know him then – mind you being this stupid it will probably not bother him. Can’t believe that Andy and Sophie are blaming this incident on cheap foreign labour – it is just as likely to be some snotty local 17 year old who thinks the world owes him a living (no offence to all the decent 17 year olds out there – don’t want to be accused of ageism – it is just to make a point that until the toerag is caught one should not make assumptions based on their own prejudices).

You are the one who is jumping to conclusions I never stated that it was a foreigner.

I said that the current employment system was creating these issues.

It could be a Guernsey citizen born and bred who sees no hope for their future because Daddy wasnt in the right club or more probably not even around.

There is a 2 tier society here (although more obvious in Jersey) and eventually it will inplode check out the UK.

‘Cheap labour from outside its shores’ explicitly states that it is a foreigner. Not from these shores means not local. I don’t think it has anything to do with no hope for the future, its opportunitism at its worst, no deeper reason. The 2 tier society exists for a reason – and its not inequalities that produce them, thats alleviating the responsibility. People who commit these crimes have no sense of civic responsibility. They need to be found and punished. Good luck. Always has happened… always will.

Well done its called taking something out of context how about “I dont think”(beginning of your third sentence) that could be interpreted that you are an idiot.

The current system will fail if there is a 2 tier society thats why Norway is alot safer than the UK.

I have nothing to say except that when talking about pondscum like this, and those who have mindlessly attacked small local businesses like this in the past, Sharia law does start to make sense…

Its been one thing after another for the Venture Garage and others related to Ben, This is a nice island to live in and now it is getting as bad as the UK. This bloke who has done this unthinkable crime needs more than a slap on the wrist, it makes me feel sick to think that he will probably get away with a small fine or a small amount of time locked up. Guernsey needs to bring in a stronger penalty, for those sick idiots, or it will be getting worse and worse over the coming years.

Throw the book at him? If Guernsey is anything like Jersey, then they will probably give him a slap on the hand. All you have to do is look through the court pages in the JEP; drunken and disordly, plus history of assualt, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and carrying drugs – £50 fine, 40 year old driver with no previous record doing 46mph in a 40mph zone, £150 fine!! Always the way and it’s a joke!
