Head teacher of St Sampson’s High, Hazel Tetlaw, pictured, said the start of any new school year gave her a buzz but this was a little bit special.

‘It really is difficult to put into words just what an experience this is. It is just a totally new feeling. It caps anything I have ever had in all my years of education.’

She said it was important to remember that, as good as the new building was, a school was more than just bricks and mortar.

‘It really is a flagship school for the island.’
