NORTHERN bowler Don Batiste, who, as the island’s 2007 champion, has been representing Guernsey in the World Bowls Champion of Champions singles tournament in Aberdeen, completed his group campaign yesterday.
And although he has clearly enjoyed rubbing shoulders with some of the best bowlers on the planet, there was a suggestion in his body language as he left the Westburn Park green that he was relieved that the ordeal was over.
‘It has been wonderful,’ he said. ‘And, yes, I have enjoyed it and I think I’ve learnt a lot. It’s certainly been an education to see the way some of these professionals play the game.
‘They are young and aggressive and, although they can draw well, they don’t hesitate to unleash an almighty drive – and aren’t they good at it? They hardly ever miss. Very impressive and a real eye-opener to me – and to Doreen [his wife].’
