Rains asks islanders to help name his new team
Thursday 4th September 2008, 2:29PM BST.
ISLANDERS are being asked to help name the new Guernsey American football team. The man behind the venture is former Farnham Knights and England national head coach Steve Rains (pictured), who recently moved to the Bailiwick.
And plans are already in place for the team to join the UK leagues. The island’s old American football team, the Guernsey Gladiators, disbanded more than 10 years ago and Rains has been told that they cannot use that name.
So he wants islanders to help choose a new moniker.
‘We need to be prepared to go into the UK League and their rules do not allow any duplication of nicknames – the Colchester Gladiators already have our former name,’ he said.
‘Current favourite amongst the players is Guernsey Storm. Others on the list of potentials are Guernsey Granite, Guernsey Hawks and Guernsey Privateers. Also on the discussed but not selected list were Guernsey Conquerors and Guernsey Green Tide.’
