LIVERPOOL’S finest turned back the years last night with a stunning performance to thrash their Guernsey counterparts at the Track.
After last year’s famous comeback against Bels, it was a completely different affair as they raced into a three-goal lead within 10 minutes as John Aldridge completed one of the easiest hat-tricks of his career.
The first was a looping header that dropped agonisingly over veteran Guernsey keeper Gerve Brazier, who had earlier made a couple of smart saves.
Aldridge doubled the lead after good work by Jason McAteer, who was impressive throughout, before another header, again off a McAteer cross, made the score 3-0.
Going in at 7-0 down, it seemed a mere formality that Liverpool would reach double figures. However, they only managed to add one more to their half-time tally, after McAteer toyed with substitute goalkeeper Steve Ingrouille, before eventually deciding to put the ball in the back of the net.
Despite the scoreline, Guernsey manager Glyn Smith was not too despondent. ‘They were a class above us. However, it was still enjoyable and I thought out players performed with distinction. Some of the lads were absolutely knackered, but they still came out again for the second half.’
