Child abuse: ‘parents with doubts must ask questions’

2v2k9686.jpgPARENTS with doubts about any sporting body should not be afraid to ask questions, says a top local official.

Guernsey Sports Commission sports development manager Graham Chester (pictured) said no parent would want to see their children suffer in the way that Eugene Hughes’s victims had.

Not all sports groups were affiliated to the commission, but those that were had criteria to satisfy. ‘For example, they have to have a child-protection policy but there is the potential for non-affiliated bodies to go without,’ he said.

He said any parent with doubts about any club or organisation should ask whoever was in charge three principal things.

‘They should ask if all coaches have been police checked and if the club has up-to-date records of that. They should also ask if the coaches who are coaching their children are adequately qualified to do so.’
