LEE MERRIEN had more than just a couple of meeting records to delight him at Foote’s Lane at the weekend.

On a personal note it had been a very satisfying event, with his new 1,500m and 5,000m records contributing to another Burton Trophy success on day one of the annual inter-insular weekend against Jersey Spartans, but arguably more importantly to him was home domination by the junior squads.

Although, Jersey went home with the Combined Trophy due, in large part, to the one-sided women’s match result, the GIAAC youngsters triumphed in three of the four junior age groups and shared the spoils in the other.

The performances of the GIAAC under-15s were again particularly encouraging and having won both boys’ and girls’ matches many of them returned to the track 24 hours later and bolstered the under-17 squads.

The result was a convincing win for the under-17 men and a much-improved performance in the girls’ match in which Jersey, so strong, were given a run for their money.
