Legislation looks to raise profile

OUTDATED legislation could be targeted as one States committee looks to raise its profile.
Chairman John Gollop (pictured) said the Legislation Select Committee was set to go into a period of ‘blue sky thinking’ as to where it would go in the future.
‘There’s a general view of the members of the committee that it will evolve from where it was in 2004 to something else,’ said Deputy Gollop.
‘Members, including myself, want to see it change, maybe have a higher profile, more heavily resourced in some respects and perhaps proactive in looking at how legislation could be improved, outmoded legislation consolidated – those are things we will look at.’
Some eyebrows have been raised that the committee, unlike the Scrutiny, Public Accounts and House committees, has not been brought under the umbrella of the same chief officer. Deputy Gollop said there was consideration in the early stages to include Legislation in the chief officer’s mandate.
