THEY considered lounging around on a beach soaking up the sun for their honeymoon.

But instead, newlyweds David and Kimberley Newman plan to take to the roads dressed in their wedding gear and join more than 150 others in the Mines Awareness Trust Bubblegum Rally.

The entrants leave Guernsey on Saturday 27 September to drive across Europe, raising money to help clear Rwanda of landmines. Mr and Mrs Newman got married on 23 August in Spokane, Washington State.

‘We knew Brin [Harrison, Bubblegum Rally organiser] and have met Ben [Remfrey, MAT founder] a few times. We were aware of MAT and what it is doing and we felt that considering we had spent a fair bit of money on the wedding it would be quite nice for our honeymoon to put something back,’ said Mr Newman, 46, who is the director of the Guernsey Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council.

The pair met years ago through a mutual friend and have been living together in the island since October.
