‘Mont Cuet hotspot needs to be doused’

Friday 19th September 2008, 2:29PM BST.

0535034.jpgPUBLIC Services is to press ahead with its plans to increase the leachate levels at Mont Cuet in an attempt to cool down a hotspot deep inside the tip.

The department has received a tentative approval for such a move from Environmental Health and Public Services minister Bernard Flouquet said it was now the only option left.

‘We have exhausted all the avenues available to us and we have no alternatives. We, as a board, really need to resolve this issue.’

Despite giving its approval, Environmental Health is still reportedly concerned about the release of undesirable gases that would come from such a tactic, but Deputy Flouquet said he was keen to meet the service as soon as possible to discuss how and when the department would go ahead with raising the leachate.

The drilling of five boreholes in July recorded temperatures of around 70C.

right bew have a fire this fire has been burningb for a long time ,you can discuss for ever how to put it out but put it out you must, guernsey used lots of money to get a english company to tell us how and where to dig a hole.just think of it a guernsey men should listen to foreigners about digging, how absurd.back top the fire it is easy to put out if you nthink right., drill your holes its underground pump in seawater its close to the beach, close the holes the land will subside and give more room to fill (bonus) the gases released will be nothing compared with what will happen if it is allowed to burn for more years.floquet i know you pull your finger out and do it you know what to do
