Mick Waters (pictured), the director of curriculum for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, was on a two-day trip to speak to local teachers, staff and politicians. And he said that it was not just the teaching that held the key.

‘It is essential that schools and employers work together. We need to give the children awareness of what is going on.’

Mr Waters was also certain what students needed to do to be noticed by potential employers.

‘They want youngsters who can read, write and add up well. They want people who are willing to speak and ready to learn as well as managing ICT very well.’
