First Manchester, then Flybe drops Norwich for the winter

Wednesday 24th September 2008, 2:29PM BST.

0606448.jpgFLYBE has pulled out of the Norwich route for the winter. It follows the airline announcing it would not operate to Manchester in the winter, something that led rival Aurigny to accuse it of cherry picking.

A Flybe spokesman said the airline had to provide services where a clear demand was identified and services were supported.

‘In view of the current economic conditions, Flybe confirms that it will not be operating its direct Norwich to Guernsey and Jersey services during the 2008-09 winter schedule,’ he said.

All passengers were being informed and offered a full refund, he added.

‘Flybe remains committed to Guernsey. We are working closely with the airport authorities in the hope that the services we continue to operate from Guernsey will be supported by the region and that we will be in a position to reintroduce this route and add new routes in the near future.’

Does anybody actually fly to Norwich from Guernsey or Jersey on a regular basis or is Aurigny just using Flybe’s announcement to put the boot in again?

I have just traveled on the flight to Paris and there were just 17 passengers on a 78 seat Q400 aircraft…it only cost me £79 return….they cannot keep operating or they will hemorrhage money …Airlines are businesses not charity’s!!

I am Guernsey born and bred living in Norfolk. I’ve just flown back to Guernsey for 4 days and had to fly from Stansted with Aurigny. Flybe only have flights to/from Norwich on a Saturday, which isn’t ideal when you only want to go for the weekend. When I lived in Guernsey and my fiance lived in Norfolk I used to fly over every month and it was so easy – Norwich airport is 40 minutes drive from where we live in Diss.

I would come over to Guernsey more often if the days/times were better with Flybe, with a 16 month-old and a 6-year old its a bit of a hassle driving 2 hours to Stansted and then having to struggle with the kids, pushchairs and luggage!

If Flybe aren’t going to do flights more than once a week, I can’t really see the point.

If these routes are seen as essential or something similar why don’t Aurigny operate the routes during winter?

After all Aurigny is owned by the taxpayer. It seems to make sense for a States owned company to operate essential or necessary routes than a private company.

No doubt Aurigny could charge premium fares for a convenience service. Problem is would passengers be willing to pay for such convenience?
