States must not leave a careless legacy: Fallaize
Wednesday 1st October 2008, 2:29PM BST.
Borrowing to build by the States would leave a careless legacy for future generations, according to one Guernsey deputy.
Deputy Matt Fallaize (pictured) said politicians who wanted to be remembered for providing new schools and hospitals should also address how to pay for those things today – not burden the island’s next generation.
‘It would be a historic, grave mistake for this States to undermine Guernsey’s commitment to prudent economic management. Borrowing to fund projects with no income would be grossly irresponsible,’ he said.
Education minister Carol Steere has said the States would need to borrow money if major projects were going to get under way.
Those included redevelopment of Les Beaucamps and La Mare de Carteret schools, the airport runway repairs and investment in mental health care – all of which are competing for priority funding.

What is Fallaize talking about. Barely off the bottle and thinks he has a grasp of economics!! Governments borrow in times of hardship to help stimulate their economies and then repay the debt during the times of wealth. As long as this is managed correctly it is a good thing.
What kind of comment is ‘not burden the next generation’. This sort of investment is exactly what would look after the next generation.
Maybe Mr Fallaize wishes to burden the next generation with delapidated schools that you cannot teach in because they are dangerous, a marvellous airport terminal that has no passengers as no planes can land on the crumbling runway and mental health care that matches that of Bolivia!!
Get with the programme Fallaize and stop talking about what you do not understand!!
