THE CI Club Championship could expand into a full-blown league next season.

Guernsey Cricket Association weekend officer David Piesing, in liaison with his counterparts in Jersey, has produced a discussion paper on the restructuring of the competition and domestic ones. The document is to form the basis of a meeting to be held with the GCA Championship clubs later this month.

‘Few people in Guernsey would argue that weekend cricket requires a shake-up in order to be more competitive,’ Piesing said. There is no doubt that many island squad players are simply not being tested enough in club cricket,’ he added.

The main proposal is to include all five Guernsey clubs and the six Jersey Premier sides in a league that would run from the middle of June – which coincides with the return of university students and the end of the Elizabeth College fixture list – until the end of August.

There would be no need for play-offs as the winners would be ‘true’ CI champions, having played all other clubs in both islands.
