SAM ROBINS has staked a claim for the £1,000 cash prize awarded to any angler who breaks a record during the West Coast Sea Angling Club’s Specimen Fish Hunt.
He was fishing in the south-west corner of the QEII Marina hoping for a golden-grey mullet when he hooked a 1-12-12 twaite shad, which improves on the current 1-10-8 shore best.
This is the second time in a fortnight that this rare fish has been caught in the harbour area after junior angler Jay Ferbrache had one of 1-9-5. Needless to say Robins has entered his catch in the October Fish of the Month competition.
It was an incredible weekend as in spite of the heavy rain and gale-force conditions, the competitors landed no fewer than 72 qualifying fish covering 16 different species.
