THE Fire & Rescue Service arrived ‘just in time’ to a High Street blaze last night. They were called to flats behind the Budah Bar at 8pm. When they arrived, the building was smoke-logged.
‘We got there just in time,’ said the service’s duty control officer. ‘The fire was mainly in the flats, but there are a lot of buildings in close proximity. It was a very difficult job.’
There were five engines on the scene and 12 firefighters. They stayed until 1am to ensure the fire was completely out.
‘At first we had trouble getting it out because the fire had spread. We then had to make sure there were no more fires inside.’
The officer said it could have been a lot worse. ‘It was just as well we got there when we did. It wasn’t a serious fire, but it could have been.’
An investigation into the cause is being carried out.
