Coat clinches Benjy’s prize

Friday 10th October 2008, 10:00AM BST.

AS Alderney’s political season swings into action, it was good to see so many islanders at the Island Hall for the by-election hustings.

Around 75 locals packed into the venue to listen to four candidates – Lois FitzGerald, Martin Hunt, Tony Llewellyn and Geoffrey Sargent – extol their virtues as would-be politicians.

The hustings were well-mannered and were over in about 90 minutes. However, during that short time, pretty much every issue that islanders care about was discussed: the smoking ban, leisure centre, waste disposal, high fuel bills, tidal power and potential marina all got an airing, as did the green belt and civil service.

In truth, there was little to split the candidates on most issues and it wouldn’t surprise this onlooker if a close election took place tomorrow.

States member Colin Williams, who chaired the hustings, commented at the end of the event on the candidates’ bravery. He said standing for the States wasn’t easy and that the four people next to him should be congratulated. At that point, Mr Williams instigated a hearty round of applause before urging the candidates who are unsuccessful to stand at the end-of-year election, when five seats will be up for grabs.

Mr Williams’ sentiment clearly struck a chord with those present, as it led many to nod their head in agreement.

It would be wonderful if at least 10 people stood in December in order to offer the electorate a genuine choice.

Voting for the by-election takes place tomorrow.

The polling station in the Members’ Room, Island Hall, will be open from 9.30am to 6.30pm.

A special fund-raising event was held in aid of the Alderney Animal Welfare Society at the weekend.

Organised to coincide with World Animal Day, AAWS members set up stalls and games and served food at their premises in Le Val.

Vet Dave Burrows also held an ‘open surgery’, which included demonstrations of operations. However, no animal was put to sleep, as Dave’s guinea pigs were all cuddly toys.

More than £200 was raised, despite the windy conditions, much to the delight of AAWS committee member Hilary Bentley.

‘We were perhaps optimistic holding an outdoor event in October, but the weather held, just, and people were very generous in their support.

‘We’re really pleased with the amount we raised.’

Prize winners were Dave Burrows, who came closest in the ‘Where’s the panda?’ competition, with Denise Martel and daughter Arianna the closest to guessing how many beasties were in a jar, using their tried and tested finger-measuring technique. And best-dressed dog was Benjy, in a very smart, brown coat with a fetching and practical fur collar.
