Alex Rich and his wife are one of a flood of customers of the stricken Icelandic bank who have contacted the Guernsey Press to reveal the harrowing cost on ordinary lives of the bank’s crash into administration earlier this week.

In a chilling email, he revealed how he fears the news may leave them homeless. ‘This was everything my wife and I had ever worked for and we are simply suicidal as we have nowhere to go and no idea how to carry on.

‘There will be blood on the hands of the Guernsey government very soon unless we find a way out. We hope you can solve this for us before it is too late.’

The family, who have two young children, recently emigrated to Australia and were advised to place their money from the sale of their house in an offshore bond while they looked for a new home there.

But this week, when they tried to withdraw cash to complete their purchase, they were told it was not possible. Now they face the prospect of losing their deposit on the house if they cannot get the hands on their cash within 21 days.
