MILK-carton recycling has got off to a good start in Guernsey.

On the first day the island has had the service, thanks to a number of organisations joining forces to provide it, thousands of cartons were collected for processing. Enthusiastic recycler Karen Taylor said islanders like her had been waiting for the service to arrive.

‘It’s good for the island and for the world,’ she said, adding that it should make a difference to the environment and landfill because so many people use Guernsey milk.

‘My granddaughter is 10 and I feel we have to show people her age what to do, to set an example and educate them because it is their environment we are ruining.’

Public Services senior project manager Rob Roussel said he was very pleased with the way the first day had gone.

‘We have already collected enough to fill five large containers and that’s with people squashing many of the cartons nice and flat,’ he said.
