Deputy calls for HPV vaccine plan expansion

A DEPUTY is calling for the human papilloma virus vaccine to be given to boys.
Jenny Tasker (pictured) said she was pleased free inoculation had been introduced locally for girls aged 12-18 but felt it could be taken further. ‘I believe that in due course this protection must be provided for boys, too,’ she said.
‘My reason for this is that once people are sexually active, unprotected sex may exacerbate damage to the cervix, thus introducing the human papilloma virus, which may develop into a cancer.’
Deputy Tasker said she had called for the provision of the vaccine locally in 2007 despite its cost. Additional funding was provided by Treasury and Resources to make the vaccine available.

It truly is a sign of the moral decline of Guernsey when we are even considering giving vaccines for STDs to 12 year olds. We live in a sex-crazed society where popular culture force-feeds the message to our children that losing your virginity is a badge of honour and “if it feels good do it and if something goes wrong never mind just pop to the doctor, abortion clinic or social security office.”
It’s high time young people were once again taught the truth that becoming sexually active carries responsibility and risk (pregnancy, illness, emotional damage and even premature death) and they would be far wiser to wait until marriage, where the health risks are significantly reduced.

Incidentally, I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t provide these vaccines – it would be wrong to withold potentially life-saving treatments from anyone.
Nevertheless they should be accompanied by the message that no amount of vaccines or treatments will remove the risk completely and they alone remain responsible for their actions.
