Jersey voters call time on clock change
Thursday 16th October 2008, 2:29PM BST.
THE campaign to move the clocks forward an hour was all but over early this morning after the Jersey public overwhelmingly rejected the move.
In a referendum held alongside yesterday’s senatorial elections, two-thirds voted against adopting Central European Time.
In Guernsey, the Policy Council has been told by the States to report back on the issue in February but it is thought extremely unlikely Guernsey would contemplate going it alone.
Jersey rejected the idea by 17,230 votes to 6,564 – although the decision is not binding on its States. CET was brought to prominence in Guernsey by former deputy Peter Roffey’s requete in February calling for it to be introduced by March 2009.
During debate, it was superseded by a successful amendment by former chief minister Mike Torode for a full report instead.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Let us hope that common sense will prevail and none of our Deputies will now want to do the opposite of what Jersey has done.
A great result. Having heard some of the Jersey arguments, it clearly makes no sense to change, and the public gave their opinion.

I wonder whether this referendum came at the wrong time for the pro-CET brigade. With the credit crunch in full swing, many who might otherwise have voted in favour may have felt that there’s enough problems at the moment without potentially adding to them and voted for the status quo.

a lot of people in mainland england are signing up petitions for campaigning for the move for longer daylight hours and, the email address is{number10@petitions.pm.gov.uk.
i think that the whole of england must follow it’s lead to keep up with the financial industries because greenwich mean time is certainly more of a step backwards, than a step forwards in life in the right direction and, also that old time zone must be abolished right now.

I am bitterly dissapointed that the C.I could even think of changing time to suit other people, they are Unique Islands, we in QLD do not change with the rest of Australia

“Longer daylight hours…”
When oh WHEN will people get into their skulls that CET will not create an extra hour’s daylight? The number of hours of daylight will remain the same (8 hours in deepest winter) and any “savings” that might be made at the end of the day (lighting and heating switched on later) will be offset by having to have heating and lighting switched on an hour earlier in the morning.
A far better solution would be to move the clocks forward at the end of February (rather than the end of March).
