Deputies in call for emergency meeting
Friday 17th October 2008, 11:30AM BST.
AN EMERGENCY States meeting should be held to get a depositors’ protection scheme introduced as quickly as possible, according to a group of deputies pressing for action.
They said also that the Policy Council needs to release more information about what it is doing to introduce a scheme.
‘Discussions held this week with members of the Policy Council have provided a measure of reassurance that matters are now being addressed with some urgency,’ they said.
‘However, we are disappointed that Policy Council has not succeeded in delivering this message to the wider public and in that respect we remain concerned about what many islanders rightly regard as a vacuum of information.’
Treasury minister Charles Parkinson is heading a sub-group working on a scheme, the lack of which has been the subject of national attention because of UK savers having money in failed Landsbanki Guernsey.
