THE GIAAC’s annual winter cross-country series has an added woman’s touch this year. There is an additional female novice section following the formation of a women’s running group by the club.
They meet at Foote’s Lane every Wednesday evening at 6.15 for a 6.30 start. Lee Merrien, the island’s athletics development officer, is pleased with the group’s progress and explained the thinking behind it.
‘Training sessions were held in the build-up to the Race for Life earlier in the year and due to popular demand, the sessions have continued through the summer and now the plan is for these to be held weekly year round.
‘The sessions cater for all levels of ability from new runners to those with more experience and are structured to ensure that everyone gets the most out of them.
‘A unique feature of the ladies’ running group is its online Yahoo community.
‘This is an email group which ensures those who join the group can be keep informed of what training sessions are organised, races/events that are going on and any other general and social information connected with the ladies’ running scheme in Guernsey.’
